Is Jesus the Only Way?
Can’t We All Be Right?
In this day and age it is politically correct to express the
notion that all paths lead to heaven. This belief, often referred to as
pluralism, tells us no one way is better than another. Upon reflection the
argument of pluralism falls apart.
- Even at a glance, essential doctrines of differing religions drastically
contradict each other.
- Each religion claims that it is the best way, if not the only way. If
pluralism is true, that every religion is equal, then all religions are
wrong on this point.
- Pluralism states that all beliefs must be treated as equal. It is wrong then
to exclude the beliefs we don’t agree with. This means we must accept those
beliefs that are considered ‘on the fringe’ (i.e. tribal sacrifice, Satanism).
Jesus Contradicts the Pluralistic View
Jesus said, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one
comes to the Father except through me.” (John 14:6) This one quote alone kills
the idea of pluralism. Either pluralism is wrong because Christianity is right
or pluralism does not exist.
To be a Christian, one who follows Christ, you believe (trust
in, rely/depend upon) that only through Christ can you be saved.
But Isn’t That Arrogant?
The short answer: it depends. If the belief that Christians
are right and everyone else is wrong is motivated by pride and supremacy then
yes, that is arrogant and wrong. But that is not the point.
Jesus did not say these words as a boxer might say I am the
champion. Instead, He said them as a firefighter who rushes into a burning
building to escort the occupants out of the building through the only safe path.
The Uniqueness of Christianity
Christianity is the only religion in the world where salvation
is not earned through actions but is based solely on accepting it as a gift from
God.
“You're not ‘doing’ anything; you're simply calling out to
God, trusting him to do it for you. That's salvation.” Romans 10:9(MSG)
